"The immigration process is very intimidating.  There are many forms to fill out and lots of documents to send in along with expensive fees and we had to go to Boston to be interviewed by immigration officers to convince them that our marriage was real.   I was overwhelmed by everything I needed to do and did not want to make any mistakes that would hurt my application.I was lucky enough to be able to afford a lawyer, but I feel very bad for people who cannot afford to because the process is extremely complicate and takes a very long time.
I got married over 4 years ago and I am still not done with my immigration process. I love living in the United States and consider it my permanent home.  I have decided to work with immigrants to use my experience dealing with the very complicated system to help new immigrants try to live the American dream like me.

Tayrone C, Brazil

Volha S, Ukraine

"I first came to the United States in 2013 when I was 22 years old apart of a work exchange visa for college students. I fell in love with my husband and we got married and I got my green card. Due to the expenses traveling home I only visited my mother once.  I became a naturalized citizen in 2019.  Because I am now a naturalized citizen, I can petition for my mother to come to the U.S. and live with me and escape the dangers of the war in Ukraine. The U.S. immigration system is focused on family unification."

Hafwsa N, Uganda

“My life is Uganda was very difficult. There is always a war going on between between different religious groups. When I was 30 my husband was killed and my children and I went to a refugee camp. My children and I were separated and I was able to go to the United States through a refugee program. When I came to America I applied for political asylum and after two years I won my case and got my green card. Though I was happy, I didn't know where my children were and I couldn't find them. It took 6 years with the help of my lawyer, but eventually my children and I were reunited, and we are happy and healthy and grateful to be living here."
